Why Utilities Prioritize Mobile Payment Strategy?

Utilities Tech Outlook | Wednesday, February 12, 2020

The mobile revolution is here, and now is the time for utilities to rethink about the comfort of their customers and give them what they really need—better ways to pay bills online with mobile devices in a hassle-free manner.

FREMONT, CA: Utility bills make up nearly a quarter of all bills that consumers pay each month. Switching from traditional means of bill payment to digital and mobile billing can bring several benefits to both utility companies and customers.

Digital is fast, and with just one click on a mobile device, a bill can be accessed and paid. These mobile payment offerings are convenient, allowing utility consumers to view and pay their bills 24/7/365. Additionally, digital payment is easy. With mails and digital wallets providing reminders for when a utility bill is available, it is easy for consumers to pay their monthly utility bills.  So, utility providers should be sure to emphasize convenience, speed, and simplicity while designing a mobile payment platform. By making bill payment less of a burden, mobile payments can make utility consumers’ lives easier. This enhanced customer experience results in customer retention too.

Utility consumers are sometimes stuck in their ways when it comes to paying bills. They might have received their utility statement in the mail, and they will always send back a check. Their paper statements often serve as a physical reminder, and this paper trail gives them peace of mind. To make these consumers switch from paper to digital, utility providers can make sure to remove barriers to adoption by integrating easy opt-in options for paperless billing and online payment through email communications. Utility providers can also train their customer service representatives to enroll a consumer in paperless billing.

Mobile payments have been quickly evolving. This is making more utility providers step into digital payment options and allow consumers to pay with their phones.
