What is New in Battery Technology?

Utilities Tech Outlook | Monday, December 02, 2019

In an age where power drives everything, innovating and upgrading battery technology has secured a greater level of importance.

FREMONT, CA: The future is battery-powered. As portable devices, smartphones, wearables, and electric vehicles make an impact, the demand for better batteries is touching the sky. Besides, the adoption of distributed and unconventional energy resources like solar and wind has necessitated the development of batteries. Batteries with higher storage capacity and enhanced properties are seeing unmatched demand today. In response to these factors, innovative battery technologies are emerging rapidly. From superfast charging to reusability, every aspect is seeing significant change. Some futuristic advancements in battery technologies are mentioned in this article.

• Faster Charging capabilities for Car Batteries

Battery-powered cars are set to replace conventional vehicles soon. With environmental sustainability becoming important, combustible engines will gradually be ruled out. To ensure the same efficiency that petrol and diesel offered, battery charging needs to be improved. With batteries that can get charged up rapidly, electric vehicles easily overcome a major limitation. A particular technology offers 200 miles of coverage with just 10 minutes of charging. Many more such revolutionary battery technologies are going to power the widespread adoption of e-vehicles

• Silicon-Powered BatteriesTop 10 Utility Analytics Solution Companies

While lithium-ion batteries have been at the center of the battery technology revolution, an upcoming alternative might be able to offer a performance that is three times better. This new technology involves the use of silicon derived from the sand as the replacement for graphite in anodes. With further development, it might soon be incorporated into lithium-ion battery manufacturing.

• Wi-Fi for Charging Batteries

As per a report published in Nature, a radio wave harvesting antenna, or a rectenna has been developed that can help harness energy from electromagnetic waves. This means that, in the near future, smart devices could be charged wirelessly by capturing energy from Wi-Fi signals. This battery technology is expected to have several implications for the consumer electronics segment.

Numerous other exciting advancements in battery technology are lined up. Foldable batteries that can be incorporated into garments and batteries that can be 3D printed will have revolutionary applications. The possibilities in this domain seem endless.
