How Photovoltaic Solar Panel Enriches Water Purification

The purification of water through energy-efficient procedures is being driven by the new photovoltaic solar panel.

FREMONT, CA: Solar panels are continuously evolving with time. Several applications are benefitting directly or indirectly from solar panels. Even though the major use cases of solar panels can be attributed to electricity and heat generation, various alternative use cases are emerging with the evolution of solar panels. For example, researchers have devised the means that utilizes solar energy to provide clean water.

The photovoltaic solar panels that used for water distillation is the same that is used for several other solar applications. Around 10% of the sunlight invading the panels is spent in producing power for operational purposes. The system applies solar radiation to generate power, which delivers a significant amount of heat as waste. The waste heat can be easily be reused in the system, hence improving efficiency.

The design of the solar panels utilized for clean water generation is novel and contributes to the effectiveness of the system. The system consists of 3 photovoltaic panels that are piled together. The heat produced by the initial layer traverses via a membrane into the second and third distillation layer, where it distills extra water.

The effectiveness of such a system can be increased by as much as 385. Researches revealed that the new solar panel design distills as much as three times the water as a conventional solar panel would do. Further, the system also generates electricity as a byproduct. Ineffective water injected into the device comes out as secure for human consumption on all measurable criteria. Moreover, the levels of lead, copper, calcium, and magnesium are well within the permitted limits.

The new means of water purification is ensuring as it utilizes solar energy. The use of renewable energy sources enables the sustainable extraction of pure water in the future.
