How IoT is Changing the Generation, Distribution, and Transmission of Energy?

By Utilities Tech Outlook | Wednesday, June 19, 2019

IoT changing energySummary: The energy generation, distribution, and transmission is changing due to utilization of IoT. With the fostering of IoT technologies a sustainable, efficient, affordable and zero wastage grid with pay as you use can be designed. The article dwells on how IoT can optimize the distribution and transmission of electricity.

FREMONT, CA: Industries have tried and tested numerous ways to leverage IoT in energy generation for achieving a sustainable and clean means of producing electricity while reducing the use of fossil fuels. The most commonly applied feature of IoT in the industrial sector is in connected sensors. The trends obtained from the sensors can predict failure of infrastructure and assist in the maintenance and avoid economic consequences in downtimes. IoT supports energy decentralization, and this has paved the way for commercialization of Small and Medium Industries and new business models like “pay as you use” off-grid solar system lighting homes to privately owned large scale stations.

Asset Management and Maintenance: All equipment is destined to crack and fail at some point due to factors like overloading or vandalization, and IoT can help solve these problems by remote monitoring through an array of parameters with sensors. The capacity of the sensors to detect failures and their sources, before it becomes critical, reduces downtime, and increases the productivity of the repair and maintenance teams.

Grid Balancing: IoT can impart the real-time information necessary to manage congestion on the circuit lines effectively. With IoT, the grid can make sure if the linked generation stations will meet the connection requirements from the frequency of the transmission to voltage modulation and control preventing instability.

Grid Contribution: The most significant trend of electricity in the past year has been to generate energy at the house level and contribute the excess to the energy grid. The surplus energy generated by either solar or windmills in several different areas like open fields and rooftops is sold to the grid. The technology that powers the transmission of electricity is IoT, the real-time data provided by the IoT solutions can be used to manage, auto-adjust the grid, and to establish stability.

Load Forecasting: The sensors fitted at key points in different substations, along distribution lines can provide information on power consumption at different zones, which can help the utilities make automated and intelligent decisions in terms of voltage control, load switching, and network configuration. The trends in the data supplied can also be implemented as the foundation for infrastructure upgrade and development.

The applications discussed depicts opportunities for entrepreneurs to perform more efficiently in delivering the additional value to users and the mix of all the IoT applications will most possibly bring about a difference to make energy cleaner, greener, and affordable.
