A kind of advanced energy storage technology, Li-ion battery is superior to traditional mechanisms, in both economic and technical aspects. The technology is used for frequency regulation, spinning reserve, and renewable integration. In addition, it helps optimize costly transmission and distribution (T&D) upgrades by deferring the investment.
With increasing demand, T&D assets need to be upgraded to keep up with the growing peak demand. Adding T&D assets can culminate into significant costs including an annual financial carrying charge, capital cost of equipment, operation, and maintenance fees.
However, the upgrades are expensive as they are planned to be used several years into the future. This is not economically viable and the need of the hour is something that would significantly reduce costs. This is where the Li-ion battery technology comes into the picture.
This technology can be used to defer the cost which comes with adding the T&D assets by offering a solution that can be added periodically in order to meet the periodic demands. The T&D upgrades that include distribution circuit capacity, additional transmission lines, and new transformer banks must be ultimately implemented to cater to the increase in demand.
The upgrades can be detached and redeployed at a different substation for T&D deferral, through Li-ion battery technology. Owing to the large shelf life of Li-ion batteries, the process can be repeated over and over again.
Leveraging the Li-ion battery technology for T&D deferral not only alleviates the cost but also enables the proper utilization of assets. This is done by purging the need for capital upgrades during the peak system loads of a brief duration.
The technology has a long way to go in terms of expanding its reach. In a few years, it would be the conventional path to follow.
