How IT Security Services Help Utility Providers Fight Cyber Threats

Utility asset operators are adopting different cybersecurity solutions to tackle the growing threat of cybersecurity.

FREMONT, CA: In recent years, utility companies have raised concerns about the growing cyber-security threats of the modern world. As utility companies are massively adopting digital infrastructures to improve their organizations’ operational efficiencies and productivity, utility asset operators look for different ways to mitigate security risks. Today, the utility asset operators actively initiate best practices to follow and secure utility substations, address asset protection, and leverage available tools. Some of the top approaches against cybersecurity include adopting IT security solutions to protect utility assets and distribution systems.

Automating utility substations provides a layer of in-depth control and monitoring abilities to the substation vendors. Deploying automation technology across the asset IT infrastructure in the utility substations can reduce the risk of cyber-attacks while improving the speed of asset operations and production. IT-based substation asset management systems upgrade the assets' cyber-security functions by assigning unique user IDs to the operators to increase the accountability of user actions and running complete audits. From the past few years, utility asset operators are considering cybersecurity solutions that offer excellent benefits like device status monitoring, device performance and communication monitoring, real-time intrusion detection, configuration management, and other on-going cybersecurity processes.

Today, cybersecurity has become a core element of every utility distribution system, which encourages the operators to look for advanced IT-based solutions against cyber threats. IT services help the operators standardize and ease the management process of security devices across their utility distribution systems. Security-monitoring IT services in the power system applications provide complete control, accurate utility flow measurement, and protection of entire utility distribution infrastructure.

IT security solutions not only provide security benefits to the utility asset operators but also to utility site teams and suppliers and site maintenance and commissioning teams by introducing better security practices.
