In parallel, the company is optimizing its operations to tackle one of the industry’s most persistent pain points: long lead times. “Lead time is king in this industry. The quicker we can deliver to customers, the happier they will be,” says Danny T. Fields, president. This ability to improve lead times and product quality stems from USG’s exclusive focus on gas pressure regulators. Unlike typical manufacturers, which are often part of large conglomerates with broad product portfolios, USG is solely dedicated to gas pressure regulators. As the only Made-in-America-compliant manufacturer of gas pressure regulators, it plans to equip utilities with innovative, future-focused solutions. Dependable Pressure Control Across the Board USG acquired the Sensus regulator portfolio following Sensus’s strategic move from mechanical products to digital technologies, such as industrial IoT hardware and software. In making this shift, Sensus sought a manufacturer that could serve as a responsible steward while maintaining the quality, functionality and affordability that utility customers expected. USG stepped in and relocated operations to a newly established facility in Ohio, where production resumed with renewed focus and capability. Its standout industrial regulator line, particularly the 441- 57S and 461- 57S models, bring a distinct edge to the pressure regulation space. Distinguishing these products is a patented rollout diaphragm technology—an innovation created by the original owner, Rockwell, not seen elsewhere in the market. The technology minimizes ‘droop,’ the drop in outlet pressure typically seen when a spring regulator opens to increase the flow and enables exceptional performance without needing a pilot. By delivering near-pilot-operated precision with the simplicity and dependability of a direct-acting unit, the regulators offer fast response and reliable operation. It’s a rare combination that simplifies performance without compromising quality, showcasing the engineering ingenuity that defines USG’s approach. Ideal for most intermediate and large-capacity applications, the 57S-series is well-suited for gas distribution systems, district regulator sets, city gate and town border stations and a wide range of industrial uses. These industry workhorses have earned a reputation for dependable service for over 70 years. Beyond industrial applications, USG’s offerings include a comprehensive portfolio of service and residential regulators designed to meet the needs of gas utilities across the entire distribution chain. While the company has already significantly improved lead time under their ownership, they are in the final stages of developing a new expedited shipping initiative to enhance lead time even further. Set to launch soon, the ‘USG Fast Pass’ and ‘Expedite’ programs will offer guaranteed fulfillment windows. For certain products, USG plans to guarantee shipment within 24 hours, while others will be available with a guaranteed four-week turnaround, well ahead of industry-standards.

Yet the industry still struggles to scale inspections effectively, largely because the process remains manual and labor-intensive. To address this, many utilities have adopted advanced tools like drones for broader imagery capture. While this improves visibility, it introduces a new challenge: data overwhelm. Drones generate massive volumes of images and video, which teams struggle to process in time for urgent decisions.

Powering Smarter Utilities through Advanced Technologies

The most effective utility innovations aren’t always the most visible. As customers expect an uninterrupted supply of electricity, water and gas, intelligent technologies operating behind the scenes have become an integral part of the industry.

Traditionally, pressure regulation in water and gas systems relied on mechanical devices set to fixed thresholds. Today, that model is being replaced by digital control systems that can actively monitor and respond to changing flow conditions.
